Massachusetts PFML Update

Great news! Sun Life will offer both fully-insured and self-funded MA PFML solutions effective January 1, 2021.

Sun Life is your best partner for employee benefits. At your request, we are excited to add administration of your MA PFML fully-insured or self-funded plan to the services we provide you today.

There are many benefits of adding MA PFML to your Sun Life lines of coverage.

  • Coordination of benefits between MA PFML, Short-Term Disability, other leaves, and employer sponsored leaves (paid and unpaid)
  • Robust reporting and data analytics
  • Short-Term Disability income replacement to complement MA PFML coverage
  • Excellent claims management and access to return to work services
  • Compliance guidance on MA PFML and other leave issues
  • Ability to customize solutions if you want to enhance the benefits under the MA PFML law

We will share what you need to file for a fully-insured private plan exemption soon.

  • If you are pursuing a self-funded solution with us, you can request our draft private plan template to use with your private plan exemption application.
  • In the meantime, remember you are required to notify employees by September 30 of plan details, plan administrator, and employee contributions. If you plan to choose Sun Life, you may list us as your fully-insured or self-funded MA PFML plan administrator.
